Regular season finale a smash for Forrest

Posted 4/30/13

Because of a soaked softball field at Community, the Unionville girls came over to Forrest on Monday as the home team and they found out the Field of Dreams belonged to the Lady Rockets, who smashed the Viqueens 16-1 in a five-inning run-rule win.

"That was a special way to end the regular season," said Forrest head coach Becky Cheatham. "Everybody got to play and everybody got to hit. I was pleased to see those young kids come in and they all did very well."

Regular season finale a smash for Forrest

Because of a soaked softball field at Community, the Unionville girls came over to Forrest on Monday as the home team and they found out the Field of Dreams belonged to the Lady Rockets, who smashed the Viqueens 16-1 in a five-inning run-rule win.

"That was a special way to end the regular season," said Forrest head coach Becky Cheatham. "Everybody got to play and everybody got to hit. I was pleased to see those young kids come in and they all did very well."

With the victory, Forrest finished with a 14-6 overall record during the regular season and 10-2 in league play, one game back of Moore County, who will receive a bye in the first round of the District 9-A Tournament that begins Thursday.

Playoffs near

The second place Lady Rockets will host MTCS in the opening round of the post-season Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. before the remainder of the tournament moves over to Huntland.

MTCS played Forrest close in a double-header earlier this month in Murfreesboro as the Lady Rockets won 6-5 and 4-2 over the last place Lady Cougars.

"I think they got our attention over there, so we better be in a better frame of mind this time or things won't turn out as well," said Cheatham. "But, I think we have a lot of confidence going in to the tournament and these eighth graders have added a new dimension to the team."

Forrest took the visiting role and ran with it, scoring nine runs as they sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning, putting the game away from the start.

Perfect night

Lainey Mays, who went 5-5 on the night, led off with a base hit and Kelsey Darnell followed with a base hit, beating out a bunt.

Katie Warrick drilled a three-run homer deep over the center field fence, making it 3-0 to light the offensive fuse.

The Lady Rockets continued to burn as Sara Jordan walked and Liz Daughrity sacrificer her to second.

Savannah Brothers also drew a base on balls and Jessica Harmon reached on a Community miscue to load the bases.

Samantha King walked to drive in Jordan before Community got the second out.

Hits keep rolling

Mays came up for the second time in the inning and bashed a two-run single to left field, making it a 6-0 ballgame.

Darnell followed with another hit, this time a two-run base knock and Warrick completed the nine-run inning with her second hit of the frame, driving in Darnell all the way from first base.

Warrick set down the Viqueens 1-2-3 in the first, and in the top of the second, Mays drove in two more runs, driving in Harmon, who had walked and Kiyoko Puca, who reached on a base hit to right field and stole second.

With Forrest leading 11-0, Jordan came to the circle for Warrick in the bottom of the inning and would proceed to give up just one Community hit the rest of the game.

The only Viqueen base hit also accounted for their lone run, coming in the bottom of the third as Sarah Pierce drove in Nikki Davis, who had walked and stole second to lead off the inning.

Five in fifth

The Lady Rockets capped off the night with a five-run top of the fifth inning as Kaitlin Burt drove home two runs, Mays knocked another, while Tayla Maupin and Piper Elmore drove home runs number 15 and 16 respectively.

Forrest banged out 17 hits in the contest as every player had at least one at bat.

Darnell (2-3, 3RS, 2RBIs, SB), Warrick (2-2, HR, 2RBIs, 2RS), and Burt (2-2, 2RBIs) all had a pair of hits in the game.

Puca (1-2,RS,SB), Kyleah Hengesbach (1-2,RS, SB), Elmore (1-2, BB, RS, RBI), Mandi Conley (1-2, RS), and Maupin (1-1, RBI) all managed one hit apiece.
