Photo submitted Eight men gather Saturday, March 5, at the courthouse in Lewisburg for a solemn ceremony to honor the 408 men from Marshall County who died fighting for the Confederacy in the War Between the States. The ceremony, Confederate Flag Day, is held each year at the Civil War Monument, put on by the Sons of the Confederacy, Marshall Rangers Camp #297. For the Marshall Rangers, the monument is important because for "some of these men this is the only monument that shows that they even existed and we ... cherish the memories of their service." The Rangers do not insert themselves in the political disputes that have arisen around displaying the 2nd National Confederate Naval Jack, the most commonly recognized of the half dozen or so flags flown by the Confederacy. "We the Sons of the Confederacy do not condone the flying of this flag as anything but a heritage flag ..." according to a news release from the Marshall Rangers Camp 297.
