EAGLEVILLE — A second-quarter charge by Forrest to capture a lead by halftime didn’t hold in the second half as Eagleville’s C.J. Goers rattled loose for 27 points and the Eagles were able to down the Rockets, 59-52.
Things got off to a bit of a sluggish start for the Rockets, who only managed eight points, including just two field goals in the opening quarter.
One of those shots from the floor came from the perimeter courtesy of Davin Porter, yet Eagleville was able to spread its offense in the opening period among five players to take a 12-8 lead after the first eight minutes.
That early Eagleville lead didn’t hold as Forrest rallied around Bray McCown and Jimmy Bond, who combined for 10 of the Rockets’ 19 points in the second to take a slim, one-point lead into the half.
Goers countered the Rocket attack with nine of his game-high 27 points in the quarter.
While the Rockets battled back in the second quarter, in the second half, the Eagles were able to lean on Goers, who scored 25 points, including a barrage of treys.
Forrest was never truly out of striking range and by the end of the third, Eagleville managed to cling to just a 41-37 lead.
Forrest nearly matched Eagleville’s offensive production in the fourth, but it was an 8-for-12 effort at the charity stripe that secured the seven-point win for the hosts.
Goers was the only Eagle to reach double figures, as he led all scorers with 27 points, while Ben Villazon and Porter combined for 24 to lead the Rocket charge.
Forrest will be back on its home court on Friday evening, hosting Cornersville at 7:30 p.m.
