It was a double runaway in the ninth edition of the Gary Wells Cup matches at the Ewell Butler Golf Course on the grounds of the Lewisburg Recreation Center on Wednesday as the Forrest boys won by 64 strokes over the Marshall County Tigers for back-to-back wins while the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs easily outdistanced the Lady Rockets by 31 shots to win its second Cup title.
“I’m very proud of my girls,” Cornersville coach Peyton Newton said. “They put the time in, they practice all the time, they are great kids, they are smart, and even when they are playing bad they put some fun in it, so it is just fun to watch them.”

“I hope we get to have a season, it’s a short season, so our goal is to get better and work towards the district tournament.”
The Forrest boys had four players shoot in the 40’s with Noah Brown leading way with a 43, Sebastian Thompson and Carter Jones both shot 46, and Bryson Jones carded a 49. Trey Williamson shot 53 and Justin Gillespie and Isaiah Moretti both came to the clubhouse in 55 strokes.
“I’m super proud of them,” Forrest coach Andy Burkett said. “Taking over three years ago I knew we had a little bit of rebuilding to do with our boys team, our girls’ team has always had a pretty prestigious record as far as being competitive and I wanted to get our boys to get to the level too.”
“It really set the tone for us when we got to play on our home course in the first round and got the chance to jump out to a pretty significant lead, we didn’t coast by any means out here at the Rec Center. It is an unfamiliar course to us, but I’m glad to see them adapt and kind of evolve to the challenge of playing a completely different course than Horton.”
In the individual portion of the three-day intra county event, a pair of freshmen captured the hardware as Marshall County’s Easton McMahon shot rounds of 44- 42-42 for a 128 total to win the Jeff Jones Medal.
“I feel like my short game was pretty good, my putting not so much, but I was doing good off the tee,” McMahon said.
Bryson Whaley had a 51 for the Tigers while Mason Collins shot 53 and Ethan Spivey carded a 58.
McMahon bogeyed the first two holes before coming up with a solid par on the Par 5 third hole, but he went into a dry spell, shooting four-over par over the next three holes.
McMahon came back strong, buoyed by a par saving putt on the Par 3 seventh hole and that was followed by back-to-back pars to finish the round.
“It was a pretty easy putt, but it was hard because I knew I had to make it to shoot a good score and after that I had two easy holes left,” McMahon said. “This means a lot actually because I never came in and felt I would be able to do this, so it is a really good feeling.”
Brown was second as he posted rounds of 44-47-43 for a 134 cumulative score.
Cornersville’s Micah Riddle and Caden Downs both ended up with 56 strokes.
Cornersville freshman Annabelle Mulliniks carded rounds of 44-42-43 for a 129 total to win the Betty Ann Ogilvie Medal total while teammate Braylin Powers was second with 50-45-47 for a 142 total over the three days.
“It was the best I ever played and it was an honor to play,” Mulliniks said. “I am extremely happy.”
Mulliniks started her round with a par on the first hole before three straight bogies.
The Cornersville frosh parred the fifth hole, but a snowman (8) on the always difficult Par 4 sixth hole momentarily dampened her spirits.
Mulliniks came back strong with a solid par on number seven before posting a birdie on the Par 4 eighth hole and a par on the ninth hole that secured the Ogilvie Award.
Mulliniks’ older brother Joseph won the Jeff Jones Award last season.
Forrest’s freshmen trio ended Wednesday’s match with Maggie Browning carding a 47, Abby Ferguson needed 64 strokes, and Christa Warren wound up with a 66.
Marshall County’s Olivia Wooten shot a 55.
The District 11A/AA Tournament is the Buford Ellington Golf Course inside of Henry Horton State Park and the Region 6A/AA Tournament will be played at the Dixie Oaks Golf Club at Summertown.
