Even though Forrest lost 58-42 to Murfreesboro Central Magnet School (MCM) in Tuesday night’s District 12-AA Tournament consolation game, the underdog Rockets are still alive in postseason play.

“We played hard, we did a good job defensively, our effort is always going to be there,” Forrest coach Corey Bishop said. “We just need to have a better focus on open shots and knock them down.”

Rockets still alive after falling in D12 AA consolation game

Even though Forrest lost 58-42 to Murfreesboro Central Magnet School (MCM) in Tuesday night’s District 12-AA Tournament consolation game, the underdog Rockets are still alive in postseason play.

“We played hard, we did a good job defensively, our effort is always going to be there,” Forrest coach Corey Bishop said. “We just need to have a better focus on open shots and knock them down.”

The last-seeded Rockets (4-26) travel to District 11-AA number-one seed Fairview (18-11) on Saturday, while MCM (13-16) goes to Centerville to take on the Hickman County Bulldogs (21-8).

“It’s a winnable game,” Bishop said about the trip to Fairview. “We are going to go in with the mindset of going in there and getting a win, treating it like an elimination game like we did last week at Giles County, so we feel like if we have the right focus and the right mindset we will be ok and we have three days to get that going for us.”

The fourth-ranked Community Vikings (29-1), riding a 16-game winning streak, captured the District 12-AA title with a closer than expected 63-53 win over Nolensville Tuesday night and host Stewart County (16-13) in Saturday’s first round of the Region 6-AA Tournament.

Nolensville (12-15) entertains third-seeded Creekwood (20-6) on Saturday.

The Rockets could not find the bottom of the net in the first half of the consolation game at Lewisburg and trailed 27-13 at the half.

“The guys did a good job of executing the offense, we just need to do a better job of converting open shots when we get them, but that has been improvement from the beginning of the year,” Bishop said. “We struggled early in the season just getting a shot off, now we feel like we do a good job of that in our half court sets.”

Andrew Timmons found the range to begin the third period with back-to-back 3-pointers, cutting the Tigers’ lead to eight points.

“Timmy played extremely hard, we have a lot of confidence in him when he gets his feet set,” Bishop said. “He is a knock down shooter and he is deceptively fast and can get in to lane quickly and use his body to his advantage.”

MCM regained the 10-point margin before Spencer McCown drove to the dish and made it an eight-point game once again, but a 3-pointer by Josh Lee extended the lead back to double digits for Magnet.

The Rockets had one last run as Timmons scored to make it a nine-point game and McCown followed with a rebound and put-back and was fouled.

McCown converted the three-point play to make it a six-point game at 34-28 with 2:33 remaining in the third period before MCM went on a backbreaking 11-2 run to end the stanza with a 45-30 lead.

The Rockets managed to cut the lead to 10 points on a McCown bucket with 3:15 left in the game, only to see the Tigers end the game with a 7-1 run to finish off Forrest.

“Give Magnet credit, they hit some open shots on us,” Bishop said. “They are a good offensive and defensive basketball team, we just have to do a better job as we go on here.”

McCown led the Rockets in the scoring column with 13 points and Timmons was also in double figures with 11.

Cameron Curtis had nine points, CJ Sanchez netted five, and Cole Villazon and Walker Herring had two points apiece.
