Austin "Doc" Manire, 91 and a resident of Chapel HIll, served as a military policeman attached to an intelligence unit in the European Theater during World War II. At the height of the war in late 1944, the private was charged with transporting German prisoners captured near the front lines to Allies' rear areas.
