Second half surge carries Lady Rockets to consolation win

Posted 2/26/20

The Forrest Lady Rockets took on Giles County for the third time this season in the District 12-AA consolation game Monday night at the Dottie Kelso Memorial Gymnasium in Lewisburg and they finished off the sweep with a hard fought 49-38 win.

“We beat them in three different types of games,” Forrest coach Jeremy Jean said. “One in O.T. which we led the whole game, one going fairly easy, and then tonight, having to come from behind to pull it out by eleven.”

“We talked about only two teams leaving with a win going into the region and we wanted one of them to be us.”

Second half surge carries Lady Rockets to consolation win

The Forrest Lady Rockets took on Giles County for the third time this season in the District 12-AA consolation game Monday night at the Dottie Kelso Memorial Gymnasium in Lewisburg and they finished off the sweep with a hard fought 49-38 win.

“We beat them in three different types of games,” Forrest coach Jeremy Jean said. “One in O.T. which we led the whole game, one going fairly easy, and then tonight, having to come from behind to pull it out by eleven.”

“We talked about only two teams leaving with a win going into the region and we wanted one of them to be us.”

With the win, Forrest (21-9) makes the two and half hour trek to Stewart County (19-10), who lost 38-29 to Creek Wood (26-3) in the District 11-AA title game Saturday night at Fairview.

“We would have liked to be playing at home or even closer to home, but at least we are still playing,” Jean said. “This year we will be going up there at full strength, barring anything happening in practice.”

Creek Wood entertains Giles County (12-15) Friday night.

Forrest was in the same scenario last season when they went to Stewart County and were eliminated by the Lady Rebels 49-35.

“Last year we weren't healthy at all and played well until late in the fourth quarter,” Jean said. “We have a veteran team, which shouldn't get rattled playing up there for the second year in a row. We just have to go up there and leave it all on the floor.”

Nolensville (23-4) hosts Fairview (15-14), while the Marshall County Tigerettes (17-8) entertains Hickman County (15-13).

The remainder of the Region 6-AA Tournament moves to Community Monday night.

The Lady Rockets trailed for much of the first quarter versus the Lady Bobcats, falling behind 9-5 with just under two minutes to play in the period when Mealer drilled a 3-pointer and with 42 seconds left in the stanza, Alex Davenport put Forrest in the lead for the first time with a three-point play in the paint.

The Lady Rockets went cold from the field in the second quarter with just two made field goals while the Lady Bobcats heated up with a 12-point period to take a 21-15 halftime lead.

“Going 6-for-30 from the field in the first half, it is hard to get going,” Jean said. “We did a good job keeping it close with our defense that kept us in the game.”

“For some reason our confidence in our ability to score the ball has slipped. I am hoping the last half will help us get over that.”

Giles County held a 24-20 lead early in the third quarter before Forrest came back again, ripping off six straight points by Curtis, who did not score in the first half.

Giles County regained the lead at 27-26 with 2:38 remaining in the stanza when the Lady Rockets got red-hot, beginning with a Langley three-bomb.

After a Giles County missed shot, Langley scored again and after a Lady Bobcats’ miscue, Curtis drained a long 3-pointer to open up a seven-point lead.

Mealer made it a nine-point game with a steal and score before Langley finished off the big third period with a pull-up jumper in the lane.

“At halftime, we just talked about how we are a really good offensive team and we weren't going to keep missing our shots, they would fall eventually,” Jean said. “We just had to speed the game up and get some rhythm back.”

“We were able to do that in the third and hang on to the lead by making some free throws in the fourth.”

Giles County did not go down easily, cutting the Forrest lead to just five points at 41-36 on a Teondra Williams bucket with just over two minutes to play in the contest.

Davenport came up huge at the other end with a rebound, essentially finishing off the Lady Bobcats, who scored just two more points down the stretch while Forrest finished with six points to claim the win.

Curtis lad all scorers in the game with 14 points while Mealer and Langley were also in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Davenport finished with seven points, Ally Blanton netted five, and Ryann Lewis scored a deuce.

Hannah Hill had 13 points to lead the Lady Bobcats, Bri Brown netted 11, Williams finished with eight, and Carrie Johnson, Ari Howard, and Kataiah Dudley all had two points apiece.
