CORNERSVILLE — A six-run outburst in the first two innings ultimately proved enough for Cornersville against visiting Richland on Friday night.
The Bulldogs’ early lead withstood a late push by the Raiders as Cornersville held on for the 7-5 win.
Starting Bulldog pitcher Daniel Sellars chewed through the top of the Raider lineup in the first inning and sat Richland down in order.
Cornersville wasted no time in seizing the lead after Gage Lovell singled to lead off the bottom of the inning.
He later scored on a Beau Shillig RBI single to left.
Courtesy base runner Garrett Schillig later stole home for the second run of the inning.
The lead ballooned in favor of the home team in the second inning when the Bulldogs were able to put four more runs on the board.
Sellars helped his own cause with a three RBI double to left and Beau Schillig later scored on a Richland error.
Richland made things interesting by knocking in two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more runs in the seventh, but couldn’t cut any further into the Bulldog lead.
Lovell went 2-for-4 with a double in the win, while Sellars was 1-for-4 with three RBIs to his credit.
Sellars went 2 2/3 innings on the mound and earned the wi, not allowing a hit or run, while striking out five.
