Semi truck wreck causes substantial damage

Mid-morning Feb. 21 a semi truck owned by a Lynnville resident overturned on Bear Creek Road causing substantial damage to the truck and roadway.

Near Bear Creek Road’s intersection with Damastus Road, truck owner Jonathan Jones was driving northbound when the wreck occurred. Jones sustained no injuries in the wreck. “One of the driver’s side trailer tires blew out and the weight dropped down and it turned over,” Jones said.

Jones was hauling on his trailer a coil of steel that weighs 47,000 pounds. “I had it loaded ‘suicide’,” Jones said. “You don’t know if you’ll survive.” When the truck turned over Jones’ primary thought was “where the hell is this coil going.”

The driver was hauling the load for Tennessee Steel Haulers.

Marshall County Superintendent of Roads Jerry Williams was on the scene to assess damage to the roadway. “This is going to be more than a patch job,” Williams said. As the truck slid it gouged a large hole in the pavement on the edge of the oncoming side of the road, as well scouring out several places where the truck’s trailer supports dug into the pavement. “We’ve got to fix this (damage) or somebody is going to get hurt,” Williams added.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol and Marshall County Sheriff deputies remained on the scene for an extended period of time. Final determination of the cause of the wreck is still under investigation.
