Marshall County High School took the short bus trip to Cornersville Tuesday night for an intra-county rivalry matchup and the Tigerettes came out gunning, draining 11 3-pointers in a 52-35 win over the Lady Bulldogs.
“Offensively we played pretty good,” MCHS coach David Steely said. “We made shots and that is what the offense is about and we did a good job of creating for the next person instead of being selfish.”
It was the senior show for the Tigerettes as Sydney Tidwell scored a career-high 17 points, including five 3-pointers while fellow classmates Karlye Wiser (9 points) nailed three treys and Dionna Crutcher (12 points) knocked down a pair of long bombs.
“Sydney had a big night and that is awesome for her, she has worked so hard for four years now and she is starting to score more points and it’s giving her more confidence and makes her feel good,” Steely said. “She just played within herself, she shot when she was open and she created some shots for other people when they would run at her.”
“All of our guards did a good job, Kayla Keiler is getting better every game and that is giving her some confidence and all of our seniors did well.”
The Tigerettes scored 15 points in the first period with 12 coming from beyond the arc as Tidwell threw down a pair, Crutcher nailed one, and Kayla Keiler had her lone trey of the ballgame as MCHS took a 15-10 lead.
There was now slowdown from long range in the second period for the Tigerettes as Tidwell drilled two more and Wiser hit her first trey of the contest as Marshall County took a 30-17 halftime lead.
Jayli Childress hit one free throw to start the second half for Cornersville before Tidwell went downtown again and after a Lady Bulldogs’ missed shot, Israel Hurt scored in the low post for MCHS to make it a 35-17 contest.
Childress came back with a big 3-pointer for the Lady Bulldogs, but Wiser answered from long distance at the other end for the Tigerettes.
Two Tidwell free throws, followed by a steal and score by Keiler gave the Tigerettes a 21-point lead at 42-21 before a Grayson Riner bucket in the low post and a steal and score by Meri Hannah Walker cut the MCHS lead to 42-25 at the end for the third period.
Tidwell picked up where she left off, draining another 3-pointer to start the second half and after a Cornersville turnover, Demiyah Blackman mailed two free throws for the Tigerettes to make it a 47-25 contest.
Alicia Polk scored for the Lady Bulldogs before Wiser finished up the long range shooting for the Tigerettes, who cruised to their second win in a row.
“We needed a win,” Steely said. “Right now we need some wins to get some confidence and hopefully we can go to Franklin County and get a win and get ready for district next week.”
The four-time state champion Tigerettes (2-6) travel to Franklin County (1-6) on Saturday and Community (5-6) on Tuesday before returning home to the Dottie Kelso Memorial Gymnasium in Lewisburg when they entertain longtime rival Giles County (2-5) in the District 12-AA opener next Friday.
“We are just glad we are getting to play,” Steely said. “They (TSSAA) could have easily pulled the plug and said we are not playing anymore this year, so it feels good to get in the gym and get to play and hopefully we can finish this season and the spring sports can have their season.”
The Lady Bulldogs (0-7) have three road games in a row as they open up the District 8-A slate at Huntland (2-3) on Friday, Cascade (0-6) on Tuesday, and off to Fayetteville (7-5) next Friday before finally returning home on January 22 when they host Moore County (3-3).
