LEWISBURG — Monday night’s District 8-AAA game against Lawrence County got off to an inauspicious start, with Marshall County giving up five runs in the first inning to the visitors.
But the Tigerettes chipped away at the Lady Wildcat lead and the capitalized on a six-run, fifth-inning as Marshall County rallied for the 11-9 win.
Lawrence County jumped on the Tigerettes in the first inning, by both smacking extra base hits and playing a little small ball.
The Lady Wildcats connected on four hits in the inning, including a RBI double and RBI triple.
Marshall County got one back in the bottom of the first inning when Courtney Lynch scored on a Lawrence County error.
The Tigerettes didn’t make a sizable dent in the Lawrence County lead until the second inning.
Haylee Hobby singled to right to lead off the inning and Lynch and Mallory Woodward drew back-to-back walks, with Woodward’s walk scoring the first run of the inning.
Kaniyah Taylor then ground into a RBI fielder’s choice, scoring Kinley Wiser.
Brittany Lynch then ground into a double play, but not before Courtney Lynch scored to cut the Lawrence County lead to 6-4.
Kori Lyttle made it a one-run game when she singled, scoring Reese Lentz.
Lawrence County answered the Tigerette surge and made it a two-run game once again with a RBI double and RBI single in the fourth inning, but as the Lady Wildcats showed, all it takes is one big inning.
That’s just what Marshall County banked on in the fifth.
Four-straight one-out singles saw the Tigerettes plate the first run of the inning on a Courtney Lynch infield single.
After Woodward ground out to first for the second out of the inning, Lawrence County opted to intentionally walk Kaniyah Taylor to load the bases, hoping to set up the force out.
Instead, Brittany Lynch smacked a two RBI double to left, which gave the Tigerettes their first lead of the night.
Leading 9-8, Brynlee Walls stepped to the plate and singled to left scoring two, but was tagged out trying to advance to second for the final out of the inning.
Brittany Lynch had a stellar night at the plate, going 1-for-4 with four RBIs to her credit, while Courtney Lynch and Walls each drove in a pair of runs.
