Coming off an 8-0 loss to East Robertson earlier in the morning, the Marshall County Tigerettes (10-12) bounced back by defeating the Martin Luther King Magnet School Lady Royals 4-1 in the first round of the Bronze Division bracket on Saturday in the Franklin/Sonic Tournament at Fly Park.

After the Tigerettes built a 4-0 lead through the first three innings of play, MLK tallied a run in the bottom of the fourth to trim the deficit to 4-1 before the game was called at the end of the frame due to time constraints.

Great effort

Despite battling a case of dehydration the previous evening, Marshall County starting pitcher Jacey Perryman showed no ill effects in the circle, as she allowed just one run in four innings of work on four hits and a walk en route to earning her 10th win of the season.

The Tigerettes also mustered only four hits and a walk against Lady Royal starting hurler Kayla Shepperson and reliever Destiny Tusie, but were aided by three hit batsmen, which contributed to three of Marshall County's four runs.

Madison Thomason went 2-for-2 with a stolen base and a RBI to lead MCHS at the plate, while Ashton Watkins added a double, a RBI, and a run scored. Perryman tallied a hit and scored a run for Marshall County as well.

Elizabeth Higgins notched two hits and a RBI to pace MLK offensively, while Shon Jordan and Mikayla Raines each had one hit.

Early start

The Tigerettes pounced on the Lady Royals early and pushed across three runs in the top of the first inning on the strength of three hit batsmen, a RBI single by Thomason, and a pair of sacrifice flies from Watkins and Madison Hargrove to grab a 3-0 lead.

Perryman then worked around a one-out single by Higgins in the bottom of the second before Marshall County tacked on another run in the top of the third to open up a 4-0 advantage. After roping a double into the left centerfield gap, Watkins advanced to third on a bloop single by Thomason prior to coming home on a passed ball.

No chance

MLK had a chance to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the third when Raines singled with one out and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Sharon Birch, but Perryman retired Lady Royal leadoff hitter Hannah Young on a groundout to snuff out the threat.

In the bottom of the fourth, MLK spoiled Perryman's shutout bid by plating one run in the frame with the help of a Jordan double, an error, and a two-out RBI single by Higgins for the 4-1 final.
