"Our performance was fair. We had some letdowns defensively, but overall we were fair. It was an offensive battle and we didn't come out top, but we also didn't come out on bottom either," said MCHS coach Mark Redferrin. "I'm happy with our team's grit and fight. They don't get down on themselves so I really kind of expected us to respond when we fell behind."
Tigerette scorers
Senior striker Emily Spence scored two goals to lead Marshall County's offensive attack while Abbey Redferrin and Cadence Ray both notched a goal and an assist.
"They're getting really creative offensively so it's really fun to watch. We're making plays that I didn't expect us to make and we're getting goals from people that I didn't expect," said Mark Redferrin.
Wayne paced the Lady Wildcats with two goals, while Chandler Jones and Brittney Stephenson scored one goal apiece with Jones registering an assist. Kat Caruso also tallied an assist for Lawrence County.
In net, Tigerette goaltender Alexis Ford finished with eight saves, while Lady Wildcat goalie Jordan Gokey recorded 10 saves.
Early lead
Marshall County opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Abbey Redferrin and Spence teamed up for a goal to give the Tigerettes a 1-0 lead. After running down a long downfield pass from Redferrin in the middle of the field, Spence dribbled around Gokey, who came out to challenge the ball, before lining a shot into the upper left hand corner of the net.
MCHS' lead would prove to be short lived, as Jones blasted a close range shot into the upper right hand corner of the goal in the 10th minute after winning the ball on the left side of the net on a corner kick play.
The Lady Wildcats then took a 2-1 lead in the 28th minute when Wayne ran down a loose ball in the middle of the field and rifled a 10-yard shot past Ford.
In the 35th minute, Abbey Redferrin retied the game at 2-2 by curling a 25-yard direct kick from the right side of the field just inside the upper corner of the far post.
Intense play
Ford thwarted a couple of Lawrence County scoring chances early in the second half, but the Lady Wildcats found the back of the net again in the 56th minute to grab a 3-2 advantage. After Ford came out to challenge her near the top of the goalie box, Caruso fired a low, skidding shot towards the right post before Stephenson ran up and hammered the ball into the unprotected net from point blank range.
The Tigerettes retied the game again in the 58th minute when Spence received a short pass from Ray in the middle of the field and blasted a close range shot through Gokey's hands to knot the score at 3-3.
Ray then staked Marshall County to a 4-3 advantage in the 75th minute by collecting a loose ball at the top of the goalie box and lofting a high arching shot just underneath the top post of the goal after a Lawrence County defender tried to clear a corner kick away from the Lady Wildcat net.
MCHS, however, was unable to hold onto the lead down the stretch, as Wayne outran the Tigerette defense to a long downfield pass by Jones before dribbling around Ford and firing a close range shot into the back of the net in the 79th minute to tie the score at 4-4.
