Tigers’ bats too much for Richland

LEWISBURG — The Marshall County Tigers brought out the bats in their final regular season game of the year on Monday night.
The Tigers connected for 12 hits and withstood a late-game surge by Richland in a 13-8 win.
After Marshall County starting pitcher Bailin Luttrell recorded a perfect 1-2-3 first inning, James Hery put the Tigers on the board in dramatic fashion by slamming a hit to left field and working his way around the bases for an inside-the-park home run.
After John Morgan Thomas and Trey Warner each drew walks to put two on, it was Grayson Miller who crushed a three-run blast to left field, giving Marshall County a 4-0 lead after the first.
Richland answered and stole one back on a solo homer of its own in the second, but the beat kept on for the Tigers, who piled on three more in the second on a two-run double off Thomas’ bat and again when he scored on a wild pitch.
By the third inning, Marshall County held a 7-4.
The Tigers plated an eighth run in the third on a Richland error and a ninth when Thomas homered in the fourth.
Richland made things interesting in the sixth by driving home four runs, but the Tigers mashed their third blast of the night when Luttrell homered to lead off a three-run sixth frame.
In total, the Tigers belted out 12 hits, three of which left the yard, and were able to minimize the damage with solid pitching from four different players.
Luttrell got the start and went two innings and struck out three, while Thomas and Warner also pitched two innings each, both striking out two.
The Tigers begin District 8-AAA play on Thursday against Spring Hill.
