LEWISBURG — A seven-run second inning was just what the Marshall County Tigers needed to take down Lawrence County on Monday night in a 8-5 district victory.
After being held scoreless in the opening frame, the Tigers went to work in the bottom of the first and made the most of their at-bats.
Trey Warner was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Reid Mitchell then connected on a base hit.
Eventually, Eli Cross ground into a RBI fielder’s choice for the first run of the inning.
Cahlin Henry then drew a walk to load the bases before James Hery singled to left, driving in a run for a 2-0 lead.
Tiger starting pitcher Bailin Luttrell helped his own cause with a RBI single as well, knocking in a third Marshall County run of the inning.
A bases-loaded walk by John Morgan Thomas and a Lawrence County error scored the next two runs before a Reid Mitchell base hit scored two more runs on a single to center field.
Lawrence County eventually got the offense rolling and scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Tigers tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth in a RBI single by Grayson Miller.
Mitchell was the top earner at the plate for the Tigers, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs to his credit, while Hery, Luttrell, Miller and Eli Cross all drove in one RBI.
Luttrell also got the start on the bump for the Tigers and went four innings, giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out four.
Warner worked the final three innings in relief and gave up one run on five hits while striking out three.
