After a pair of road losses at Coffee County and Franklin County the Marshall County Tigers finished off the three-game road swing with a big 61-58 win at archrival Columbia Central Tuesday night.
The Tigers had three players in double figures in the scoring column with Canelius Turner leading the way with 20 points, including five 3-pointers.
Bryson Hughes also came up huge with 13 points and three treys and Devonte Davis had a solid game with 10 points.
Silas Hurt was held scoreless for three quarters before tallying all eight of his points in the deciding fourth quarter.
“It was wild one, it was like the last two minutes when it got really crazy,” Hurt said. “That’s when we all started to get in the groove and played defense really good, so I think this is a really big win for us.”
Marshall County opened up an early 10-5 lead after a steal and score by Hughes midway through the first quarter before Central mounted a comeback with a 6-2 run, capped off by an Eli McCoy 3-pointer and one late free throw by Meach McCoy that cut the MCHS lead to one point at the end of the first stanza.
Early in the second quarter a Carter Szydlowski rebound and put-back put the Lions in front 15-14, but the Tigers responded with a Turner 3-pointer and moments later, Hughes came up with a steal and went to the free throw line where he buried both attempts to make it a 19-15 contest.
Columbia came back once again, going on a 7-2 run to seize back the lead at 22-21 before Hughes and Turner rained home back-to-back 3-pointers, giving the Tigers a 27-22 lead.
Central scored five points in a row to tie the game at 27 and the first half ended in a 30-30 tie when Kaamil Hazel drilled a 3-pointer for the Tigers and the Lions matched the long bomb when Omari Franklin rained home a buzzer-beater.
The Lions came out strong to start the second half, putting together a 7-1 capped off by Cameron Johnson 3-pointer as the pulled in front 37-31.
Marshall County responded quickly as Turner and Davis knocked down a pair of free throws apiece and then Davis scored on a drive to the rim to tie the game.
An Omari Franklin bucket was followed by a D'Verian Reynolds 3-pointer for Columbia, making it a 42-37 ballgame, but the topsy turvy encounter continued as Turner and Devon Wilson capped off a 6-1 run to end the period with the Tigers trailing by one point at 44-43, entering the fourth quarter.
Szydlowski scored on a three-point play the old-fashioned way to kick off the final eight minutes of non-stop action.
Turner drilled a 3-pointer at the six minute mark of the period and Hurt finally got on the board with two free throws 33 seconds later.
A Columbia Central turnover out of a timeout was followed by a huge 3-pointer by Hughes, giving MCHS a 51-46 lead.
The Lions fought back with a 6-1 run to make it a 53-52 contest before Hurt scored on a rebound and put-back and Hazel stripped the ball from Columbia and raced in for a layup to put MCHS up by five points, forcing a Central timeout with 2:36 remaining in the game.
Eli McCoy made both ends of a one-and-one opportunity from the free throw line moments later before Hurt scored on a pretty reverse lay-up and after a Lions’ missed field goal, Hurt scored over the top on the run to put the Tigers in front 61-54 with less than a minute to play.
“Coach (Lavon King) was telling us to do what we can and I tried my best and kept shooting,” Hurt said. “I didn’t score until the fourth quarter, but coach was trusting me to just keep on shooting the ball and I got a free throw and a quick eight points that sealed the game.”
Central (1-7) was able to narrow the lead to three points with 35 seconds left before the Tigers finished them off to secure the season series split.
“This was a really big game, but that just shows we can improve every single game,” Hurt said. “We just have to take it game by game until we get to district time and that’s when we can step it up even more, but we are improving every game and that’s what you want.”
Marshall County (3-4) hosts Hickman County (7-3) Friday night before taking on Summertown (4-4) in the Eagles’ Christmas Classic on Saturday, December 28 at 8 p.m.
