On Monday, the Marshall County Tigers golf team saw their season come to an end when they finished in sixth place at the Region 6-A-AA tournament, which was held at Montgomery Bell State Park.

Taking the four best rounds from five players, the Tigers posted a team score of 370 after playing all 18 holes at Montgomery Bell. Junior Brooks Leftwich recorded the ninth best individual score of the tournament and led MCHS with an 80, but narrowly missed earning an at large bid to the State tournament.

'Great' round

"Brooks played great. He had a pretty solid round even though he shot an eight on one hole. A lot of kids would have given up after that, but he dug his nose in and kept grinding," said Marshall County coach Robby Giles. "When they redid the Region, they added a couple of private schools and they're usually pretty good so that made it tougher to advance this year."

Senior Austin Blade was the only other MCHS player to break 100 on the day and followed Leftwich with an 88, while Patrick Kennedy and Carson Hill carded a 100 and a 102 respectively. Zach Smith notched a 103 for the Tigers as well.

"It was tough on the kids because it was a new course to most of them. Only two guys on the team had played it before and it's a tough course. I think I saw only one straight fairway all day. You have to hit it in the fairway here to shoot a good score and we didn't do that today," said Giles.

Region winners

Christ Presbyterian Academy took home the boys championship trophy and earned the Region's lone bid to the team competition of the State tournament by tallying a 299. Grayson Davis and Scotty Hudson both shot an even par 71 to help the Lions claim the Region title, while Luke Zieman tallied a 77. Jeremiah Cox also carded an 80 for CPA.

Cascade finished second in the team standings with a 322, while Hickman County tallied a 336. Montgomery Central came in fourth with a 356 and Columbia Academy placed fifth with a 365.

Individual play

In the individual standings, Davis defeated Hudson on the second playoff hole to win first medalist honors in the tournament, while Cascade's Tanner Burks claimed third place and earned one of the four at large spots in the State tourney with a 75.

Hickman County's Eric Gilbert, Columbia Academy's Lake Lomax, Perry County's Garrett Daniel, and Cascade's Tyler Huff all shot 76 and had to compete in a playoff to determine fourth place and who would claim the final three at large spots in the State tournament.

Lomax was eliminated from the playoff on the first hole after finishing with a bogie, while the other three players all shot par to earn the last three at large berths. Gilbert then birdied the second hole to take home fourth place in the tournament.

Girls

CPA also claimed the girls tournament title and earned a spot in the team competition of the State tourney by recording a score of 160 after taking the two best rounds from three players. Siarra Stout shot a 77 to pace the Lady Lions while Sara Grace Black carded an 83.

Lewis County grabbed second place with a 179 and Spring Hill finished third with a 191. Waverly shot a 193 to claim fourth place, while Hickman County came in fifth with a 214. Page placed sixth in the team standings with a 225.

Stout earned first medalist honors in the girls individual competition, while Spring Hill's Libby Coop shot an 81 to claim second place. Black garnered third place and Lewis County's Calli Anna McDonald carded an 88 to take home fourth place.

Lewis County's Olivia Hinson and Waverly's Madison Roberts joined Coop and Hinson in the State tournament by shooting a 91 and a 96 respectively to grab the other two at large bids.
