The Marshall County Tigers retained the coveted Gary Wells Cup, outdistancing Cornersville by 70 shots and Forrest by a whopping 97 strokes in the three-legged event, which concluded Tuesday at Saddle Creek Golf Club in Lewisburg.
"Back-to-back, that just has a good sound to it," said MCHS head coach Robby Giles. "I wasn't part of the first year, but it is just nice to carry on this good tradition."
Jeff Jones Medal
Tiger junior Brooks Leftwich backed up rounds of 38 and 39 with a rough 44 on Tuesday to take home the Jeff Jones Medal as individual low medalist.
"That's a lot of pressure on a kid his age, knowing he is in the lead," said Giles. "You know, all these kids want to do well, they know each other being from the same towns,so they want to do well. Brooks knew he was in the lead, he felt the pressure a little bit, but in the end, he pulled it out."
Leftwich's three-day 121 total was three shots better than senior teammate Austin Blade (40-43-41-124) and six strokes clear of Forrest sophomore Gary Lukenon (40-42-45-127).
"It feels really good for the team to go back-to-back," said Leftwich.
Strong finish
"The first two rounds went great and the last round was a little tough, but I really enjoyed it and tried to stay in there with some tough holes and did the best I possibly could,"said Leftwich. "It was good to come in with that cushion, I knew I had a five shot lead over Austin and Gary, I had a couple shots here and there and I knew I just had to finish strong."
Bulldog veteran Tate Lowery had another solid outing, shooting a three-day total 130 (47-41-42) and Matthew Karbon ended up at 148 (49-52-47).
Carson Hill from MCHS ended up with 132 total strokes via rounds of 43, 42, and 47, Robert Garcia from Forest netted 157 (50-53-54), Colbe McMahon from Cornersville needed 159 strokes (52-51-56), and Rocket youngster Tim Elliot came to the clubhouse with a 172 (57-54-61).
Girls
On the girl's side, Forrest won the cup as Lady Rocket freshman Dani Hoeft and sophomore Caitlin Burt teamed up for a 258 total over the three legs, while the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs finished second with a 272.
Hoeft took home low medalist honors with rounds of 46, 40, 42 for a 128, while Burt finished second (41-47-42-130) and Cornersville teammates Emma Reese (42-47-47) and Carly Salsman (46-47-43) carded identical 136 totals.
Cornersville's Ellie Jackson's card was marked with (50-44-43) for a 137 and while Forrest's Alyssa Elliot (56-44-42) rounded out the girls' scoring with a 142.
Dinner
After the match, the teams, players' parents, and special guests the Jeff Jones Family partook in a catered meal before listening to some words of wit and wisdom from MCHS graduate and two-time TSSAA state champion Joey Morefield, who delighted the crowd as guest speaker.
"Last year we just had the tournament, so we talked and asked what could we do to take it to the next level, so we had the dinner," said Giles. "When you think about golf in Marshall County, you think about coach Wells. When I went and asked Joey, he did not hesitate, it was an honor to him and an honor to coach Wells."
