The Marshall County Tigers (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season on the pitch when they dropped a 4-1 decision to the Shelbyville Golden Eagles (2-1) on Tuesday night at home.
Having outscored their two previous opponents by a count of 16-1, the Tigers hung tough with Shelbyville early and battled the Golden Eagles to a 1-1 tie late in the first half.
Shelbyville, however, swung the momentum in their favor by tallying a goal in the waning moments of the opening stanza to take a 2-1 lead into the break before outscoring MCHS 2-0 in the second half to claim their second win of the season.
'Tentative' start
"We were nervous and a bit tentative at the start of the game and the goal at the end of the first half set the tone for the second half," said Marshall County coach Mark Redferrin. "We've had a good start to the season, but playing tough opponents helps you get better and prepares you for District play."
Aided by their strong second half performance, the Golden Eagles outshot the Tigers 16-11 overall. Ismael Hernandez and Octavio Ayala notched two goals apiece to spearhead Shelbyville's offensive attack, while Jovan Cruz registered an assist. Goaltender Detrell Carpenter turned in a solid performance in net for the Golden Eagles and finished with 10 saves.
Luis Consuelo scored Marshall County's lone goal of the contest and attempted three shots overall. Luis Zarate attempted a team high four shots, while Jose Pineda fired two shots on net. Leon Renato and Ben Jordan took one shot apiece for the Tigers as well.
Goal play
Freshman goaltender Kamron Middaugh started the game for MCHS and allowed one goal. Pablo Salinas then replaced Middaugh in net early in the first half and made several tough saves en route to stopping 12 shots overall.
"I'm really proud that Pablo Salinas stepped up and had a really great game. He made some huge saves for us," said Redferrin.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by notching a goal in the 12th minute. After Middaugh mishandled the ball in front of the MCHS net, Hernandez ran up and fired a close range shot into the lower right hand corner of the goal.
Marshall County tied the game at 1-1 just four minutes later when Consuelo rifled a 25-yard shot into the upper right hand corner of the net from the left side of the field.
Salinas stops
Salinas then thwarted three Golden Eagle scoring chances over the next 18 minutes, but Hernandez gave Shelbyville a 2-1 advantage in the 40th minute by scoring on a breakaway after outrunning the MCHS defense to a clearance kick.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles began to take control of the game and stretched their lead to 3-1 in the 61st minute when Ayala took a pass from Cruz in the middle of the field and fired a 12-yard shot just underneath the top post.
Ayala then capped Shelbyville's 4-1 win by kicking in a rebound in the 66th minute after Salinas was unable to cleanly catch a long range shot by Ivan Leyva.
