The Marshall County Tigers golf team widened their lead over the Cornersville Bulldogs and Forrest Rockets in the Gary Wells Cup by turning in a strong performance in the second leg of the event at the Lewisburg Recreation Center on a rainy Monday afternoon.

Although the match was halted for 30 minutes due to heavy rains, the Tigers didn't seem bothered by the damp conditions and posted a season best team score of 161 after taking the four best rounds from six golfers. Cornersville finished with the second best score of the day and tallied a 179, while Forrest recorded a 192.

Thanks to Monday's results, Marshall County opened up a 53 shot lead in the Gary Wells Cup standings and have a team score of 324 through the first two legs of the event. The Bulldogs moved into second place in the standings with two-day total of 377, while the Rockets sit in third place with a 380.

Tigers

Brooks Leftwich recorded the lowest score of the match and led MCHS with a 38. Sophomore Zach Smith followed Leftwich with a career best 39, while Wilson Spivey and Carson Hill both carded a 42. Austin Blade and Kasey Beard also notched a 43 and a 51 respectively for the Tigers.

"Considering the conditions and the weather delay, I thought we bounced back well," said Marshall County coach Robby Giles. "Brooks has been real consistent for us. He's just a junior, but he's definitely one of the leaders on the team. Zach Smith also stepped up and shot a 39. It's always great when young guys can contribute."

Bulldogs

Tate Lowery was the low man for Cornersville and paced the Bulldogs with a 41. J.D. Crabtree and Kolbe McMahon also turned in solid rounds and shot a 43 and a 44 respectively, while Colbe Downs turned in a 51. Matthew Karban tallied a 52 for the Bulldogs as well and Blake Calahan recorded a 55.

"I'm pleased with how we played today because that's one of the best scores that we've shot all year," said CHS coach Joy McMasters. "The conditions weren't real good, but we were able to play through them. I think we're improving as a team."

Rockets

Gary Lukonen once again posted the best score of the day for the Rockets and led Forrest with a 42. Hawken King followed Lukonen with a 47, while Jarvis Lyttle and Robert Garcia tallied a 50 and 53 respectively. Tim Elliot also shot a 54 for FHS and Dayton Ward notched a 56.

"We didn't play real well today. We just have to get better and get mentally tougher. They got wet today and it looked like they pouted. It was wet for everybody else too. I think we will get better though," said Forrest coach Jeremy Jean.

Girls

In the girls match, Forrest and Cornersville were only able to play seven holes before the contest was called due to darkness. Taking the two best rounds from three players, the Lady Rockets extended their lead in the Gary Wells Cup standings by shooting an 84, while the Lady Bulldogs finished with a 91.

With Monday's effort, Forrest has a team score of 171 through the first two legs of the event. Cornersville is still within striking distance and is eight strokes off the pace with a 179.

Dani Hoeft posted the low round of the day for the Lady Rockets with a 40, while Alyssa Elliot carded a 44. Caitlin Burt also tallied a 47 for FHS.

Ellie Jackson led the Lady Bulldogs with a 44, while Emma Reese and Carly Salsman both turned in a 47.
