After pounding Culleoka 84-39 two weeks earlier, the Marshall County Tigers (4-1) took the Warriors behind the woodshed again on Saturday night when they rolled to a 65-18 win at home.
The Tigers overwhelmed Culleoka (1-6) at the start of the game and built a 37-8 lead in the first half before outscoring the Warriors 28-10 over the final two quarters to record their third straight blowout victory.
Despite hitting just 4-of-20 attempts from three-point range, Marshall County still finished with 27 field goals on 44 percent shooting. The Tigers also committed just seven turnovers, outrebounded Culleoka 42-20, and held a 17-6 edge on the offensive glass.
No letdown
"I was worried about having a letdown tonight. When you beat someone by a large margin, you can get overconfident and focus on individual things. I thought we did some things well concept wise and played as a team. We came out and did what we were supposed to do," said MCHS coach Adrian Wilson.
The Tigers once again spread the wealth offensively, as 11 different Marshall County players scored in the game. Senior shooting guard Aaron Hobbs led MCHS with 11 points and Malek Sain tallied 10 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Kasey Pleas and Quavion Harris added eight points apiece as well, while Tre Crutcher, D'Andre Brown, Jay Howard, and Steven Dangerfield notched seven, six, five, and four points respectively. Chris Walker, Dayveontae Brown, and Darious McKenzie rounded out the scoring for the Tigers with two points each.
Stifling defense
Marshall County, meanwhile, almost totally shutdown the Warriors' offense and limited them to a mere five field goals on 14 percent shooting, which included a 2-of-12 effort from three-point range, while forcing 26 Culleoka turnovers.
Austin Creps paced the Warriors with eight points and Westin Ford added four points. Sam Davis and Mason Lovell also chipped in two points apiece for Culleoka, while Craig Parks and Matthew Gilliam both had one point.
The game got out of hand early, as the Tigers built a 20-0 lead in the first quarter with the help of a Hobbs trey and four points apiece from Pleas, D'Andre Brown, and Harris.
Marshall County continued to rapidly expand their lead in the second period and tallied the first 11 points of the stanza on Hobbs three, a pair of treys from Sain, and a layup by Hobbs to open up a 31-0 advantage.
Rare scores
The Warriors finally got on the board thanks to an offensive put back by Lovell to trim the deficit to 31-2 with 5:03 left in the second quarter, before Howard and Harris sandwiched a jumper and a layup around a Gilliam free throw to make it 35-3.
After Culleoka outscored MCHS 5-2 over the final two and half minutes of the first half to narrow the gap to 37-8, the Tigers opened the third quarter with a 19-5 run on the strength of a Hobbs three-point play and four points apiece from Pleas and Crutcher to push their lead to 56-13.
Creps drilled a three as time expired in the third quarter to close the gap to 56-16 but Marshall County notched the first nine points of the fourth period with the help of baskets from Dangerfield, Crutcher, and Dayveontae Brown to forge a 65-16 advantage before claiming the 65-18 win.
