On Thursday, the Marshall County Tigers picked up their first win in District 12-AA play when they thrashed the Fairview Yellow Jackets 15-4 in five innings at home to snap a two-game losing streak.
Having scored just a total of five runs in their three previous games, the Tigers (2-2, 1-2 District) finally broke out of their offensive slump and finished with 10 hits and four walks against two Fairview pitchers while the Yellow Jackets (4-2, 2-1 District) committed five errors in the contest.
Right fielder Bubba Houghton led Marshall County's offensive attack by going 3-for-3 with a triple, 2 RBI, and a run scored. Ryan Richardson and Dylan McKnight both tallied two hits for MCHS as well and drove in three and two runs respectively, while Zack Kirby (2 RBI), Matt Sharp (2 RBI), and Aaron Hobbs each had one hit.
Tiger starting pitcher Ryan McDaniel went the distance on the mound to pick up the win and allowed six hits and a walk in five innings of work to go along with three strikeouts.
Jeremiah Dunn doubled and scored a run to account for Fairview's lone extra base hit of the contest, while Seth McCormick (1 RBI), Mike Jordan (1 RBI), Hunter Zimmerman, Hunter Myatt, and starting pitcher Jesse LeJeune all singled. LeJeune also suffered the loss after yielding nine runs over two innings on six hits and two walks.
Marshall County got off to a much needed fast start and pushed across two runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a leadoff single by Hobbs, a Yellow Jacket error, a Hayden Bailey walk, and a RBI groundout by McDaniel to grab a 2-0 lead.
The Tigers then blew the game open in the second inning by crossing home plate seven times in the frame on the strength of two hit batsman, a walk, a Fairview error, a Houghton RBI triple, a two-run single by McKnight, a Sharp RBI single, a Richardson two-run single, and a RBI single by Houghton to forge a 9-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, MCHS stretched their lead to 10-0 when Hobbs sprinted home on a sacrifice fly by Sharp after drawing a leadoff walk and advancing to third on a McKnight single.
After the Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the top of the fourth on RBI singles by McCormick and Jordan to trim the deficit to 10-2, Marshall County crossed home plate five more times in the bottom half of the frame with the help of three Fairview errors, a Richardson RBI single, and a Kirby two-run double to stretch their lead to 15-2.
Fairview then tallied two runs in the top of the fifth with the help of a Zimmerman single, a double by Dunn, and a MCHS error to narrow the gap to 15-4, before the Tigers kept the mercy rule in effect by turning a game ending 4-3 double play.
