The Cornersville Middle School Bulldogs (7-0) came into Thursday night’s homecoming game versus Huntland needing a win to post an undefeated regular season record and earn a spot in the Elk Valley Conference Championship game and they got it with a hard fought 28-8 victory over the Hornets.

The Bulldogs face the South Lincoln Eagles in the title game Saturday at Lincoln County High School with kickoff slated for 2 p.m.

Huntland received the opening kickoff and drove to the CMS 32-yard line before a Bryson Alexander sack put the Hornets in a long fourth-and-18 spot.

Alexander came up huge again, coming up with a sack/fumble to stop the Hornets’ drive with 2:08 remaining in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs got behind the markers, but got out of a third-and-16 spot when quarterback Caden White found Mason Calahan out of the backfield.

Calahan rumbled to the Huntland 31-yard line and on the next snap, Nick Nuenswander took it to the house. Calahan added the 2-pt. conversion run to make it 8-0 with 10 seconds left in the first quarter.

Huntland put together another long drive and this time they converted on a Bryson Johnson 31-yard run. Johnson also added the 2-pt conversion run and the game was tied with 1:57 remaining in the first half.

The Bulldogs answered quickly as Riley Qualls came up with a long kickoff return to the Huntland 30-yard line.

Three snaps later, Skyler Davis hauled in 24-yard touchdown pass from White, but the PAT was no good and the Bulldogs led 14-8 with 0:49 left in the first half.

Huntland tried to mount a scoring drive, but time ran out in the first half with the Bulldogs in front by six points.

Cornersville received the second half kickoff and marched all the way to the Huntland 32-yard where the Hornets’ defense came up with a huge fourth down stop to get the ball back with 4:06 remaining in the third quarter.

The Hornets looked like they were going to answer, driving to the CMS 32-yard line before Davis came up with an interception on a fourth down pass nine seconds into the fourth quarter.

On the next play from scrimmage, Nuenswander broke to outside and raced 74 yards for a touchdown. The 2-pt. conversion run failed, making 20-8 with 7:38 left in the contest.

The Bulldogs’ defense, fueled by the Nuenswander score, held again when a Huntland fourth down pass fell incomplete, giving the ball back to CMS with 5:44 remaining in the contest.

Cornersville took over after the stop at the Huntland 27-yard line and Calahan was in the end zone for a touchdown two plays later to seal the win, an undefeated regular season, and a spot in the title tilt for the second season in a row.
