United Givers Fund closing its doors

There is a sign on the courthouse lawn for United Givers Fund of Marshall County Inc. with a thermometer-style graph showing that contributions are almost halfway to the goal of $60,000.

Alas, says Executive Director Tammy Thompson, that goal is never going to be reached. In fact, Thompson says she's got to get the sign removed because the UGF is shutting down.

In its heyday, United Givers Fund took in more than $100,000 a year, distributing the funds to some 20 local agencies including the Scouts, veterans groups, senior citizens, the Alzheimer's Association, the child development center, Good Samaritans, Haven of Hope, and others.

People who gave could designate which agency on the list would benefit. To get on the list, local agencies that wanted funds had to appear before the UGF board with their budget, and the board would vote to determine whether to accept the agency and what percentage of the money the agency would receive.
