Viqueens stun Lady Rockets with walk-off homer

UNIONVILLE — After driving in three runs in the fourth inning, things looked promising for the Forrest Lady Rockets to leave Unionville with a key District 7-AA win on Tuesday night.
But Community rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by a walk-off home run by Alana Tate as the Viqueens took down Forrest for the first time in several years in a 7-6 thriller.
Last season, both Community and Forrest participated in the Class 2A state softball tournament, and the two teams met five times in the season, with Forrest sweeping the matchups, including two, one-run victories over Community.
Things appeared to be going the same way on Tuesday night.
Macyn Kirby led off the game with a single to right in the very first at-bat, and then later scored on a RBI single by Carli Warner.
Community rallied, with two outs, in the bottom of the inning for a pair of runs and held a 2-1 lead over Forrest until Taylor Moreland singled home Jenna Goodman to tie the game at two apiece by the end of the third.
The Lady Rockets took total control of the game in the fourth inning after Christa Warren singled to center field and then Briley Burnham safely reached via error, bringing Sarah King to the plate.
King settled in at the dish and mashed a three-run blast over the right field fence, giving Community a 5-2 lead.
Forrest played add on with a sac-fly RBI by Abby Ferguson in the top of the seventh, bumping the Lady Rocket lead to 6-2.
But Community answered the bell with three-straight singles, a run on a throwing error, a two RBI double and Tate’s game-winning homer.
In total, the Lady Rockets hammered out 13 hits and were led by the three RBI night by King.
Ella Chilton went six innings for the Lady Rockets and gave up six runs on five hits while striking out three.
Forrest stepped out of district play on Wednesday evening and faced Oakland at home, however, results were unavailable by press time.
