Amy Blackwell and her art classes at Westhills Elementary School teamed up with the United Auto Workers to create Christmas cards for delivery to patients at Veterans Administration hospitals in Middle Tennessee. Mike Martinez, with the UAW Local 1853 veterans committee, approached Blackwell and her students with an offer; he’d provide the supplies if they would make cards to go along with Christmas packages for veterans provided by the UAW. Blackwell’s classes made more than 100 cards by hand, providing each with a personal touch and a great deal of skill and artistry, capturing the spirit of the holidays.
