Gary J. Christman, 70, of the Holts Corner Community, died Sunday morning, Aug. 18, 2013.

Mr. Christman was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and was a son of the late Luther Parmalee and Dorthy Mary Black Christman. He served as a medic in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He retired after 23 years as a Critical Care Nurse at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, during which time he also taught nursing at Columbia State Community College. Gary was also the retired owner of Christman's Nursery and Garden Center in Chapel Hill.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughters, Mary Lee Christman and Cristy Renee Flye.

Mr. Christman is survived by his wife, Dianne Christman of the Holts Corner Community; children, Cathy Lou (Rex) Bowman and Leanne Flye (John) Blakemore, both of Chapel Hill; sisters, Judy (Tom) Kinney of Madison, Wis. and Lillian (Hank) Christman of Fairfax County, Va.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Aug. 20, from the chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Chatman officiating. Burial followed in Swanson Cemetery in Chapel Hill.

Chuck Kirksey, Kyle Patin, Ron Lampley, Jimmy Johnson, Robbie Sullivan, Dale Crossno, Bobby Purdom, Tommy Howell, and Bill Preston served as pallbearers.

Carell Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, 2200 Children's Way, Nashville, TN 37232, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942, in memory of Gary J. Christman.

Lawrence Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., was in charge of arrangements.
